CAN’T REACH
THE PHONE
The
hospital room seemed dull and gray
Pink walls were cold consolation to the words
Inoperable
Unsure
Just have to wait and see
It was one of those times you just have to talk with someone
With your mother
One of those times
And there was the phone, well within reach
For a normal person
Even lying in the bed, it was well within reach
For a healthy person
But not for me
That gnawing demon had drained so much strength
I could not stir to raise my hand
Not even to raise my hand
It was pathetic
Sad
Frightening
But I started to laugh
There’s no one I can call
I thought
I can’t even reach the phone
And the biggest joke of all was that I insisted on trying to work from
the hospital bed
Important work to finish
Important work
I started to laugh
Lord, you’ll have to do the work now, I said
And the funniest thing was...
He did.
